What the experiment does
This is an original 64 × 64 teaching image, not a picture or recording from Voyager. Its circle is accompanied by an uneven L in the upper left. The extra mark makes a reflection visible when the circle alone would not.
The stream contains 4,096 values: 1 for black, 0 for white. Each original column runs from top to bottom; columns run from left to right. Changing the line length regroups those same numbers. A short final column is padded white; no samples are discarded.
Start offset rotates the stream, moving the skipped samples to the end. Pixel width stretches the display horizontally without changing the data. Mirror reverses the column positions. Known settings restores 64 samples, zero offset, square pixels and no mirror. Start again returns to the scrambled opening.
Voyager’s real photographs were encoded as an analog signal with 512 vertical lines and synchronization instructions. This little digital model leaves out the waveform, timing pulses, interlacing, grayscale and noise. It isolates the problem of arranging a sequence in two dimensions.
